James Marshall Hendrix picked up the guitar as a teenager and spent years grinding through the chitlin circuit, backing Little Richard and the Isley Brothers before Chas Chandler spotted him in a New York club and brought him to London in 1966.

There, he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, and within months the trio had the UK in thrall.

Are You Experienced arrived in 1967—a debut so radical it rendered the rulebook obsolete. "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," and "The Wind Cries Mary" announced a new language for the electric guitar. Axis: Bold as Love and the sprawling double album Electric Ladyland followed in quick succession, each pushing further into uncharted sonic territory.

By the time he closed Woodstock in 1969 with a searing, feedback-drenched "Star-Spangled Banner," Hendrix had become the defining voice of a generation in freefall.
