Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the late 1960s from the United States' urban nightlife scene, particularly in African-American, Italian-American, LGBTQ+ and Latino communities.

Disco wasn’t born in a boardroom — it glittered its way out of sweaty dance floors, velvet ropes, and mirror balls. This unapologetically fabulous genre married pulsing four-on-the-floor beats with lush strings, funky basslines, and enough cowbell to keep everyone moving. It was the era when falsettos reigned supreme, platform shoes were dangerously high, and sequins were practically mandatory.

Disco was all about liberation — a place where you could strut like you owned the night, no questions asked. Even as critics rolled their eyes, the music got louder, the dance floors got hotter, and the nights got longer. Though the “Disco Sucks” movement tried to dim the glitter ball, the genre never really died — it just went undercover in house, pop, and countless guilty-pleasure playlists. Stayin’ alive, indeed.
