Founded by Berry Gordy Jr. as Tamla Records in 1959 and incorporated as Motown Record Corporation in 1960, the label transformed Detroit—“Motor Town”—into the heartbeat of American soul. Under Gordy’s visionary leadership, Motown became a hit factory, crafting a signature sound that blended gospel passion, pop polish, and irresistible rhythm.

Its roster reads like a who’s who of music history: The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5. Together they created timeless classics such as “My Girl,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” and “I Want You Back.” More than just a label, Motown proved to be a movement—bridging racial divides and shaping the sound of modern pop and R&B for generations.
