Genesis

Formed in 1967 by a group of school friends — Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips, and later joined by Steve Hackett and Phil Collins.

The band began as an ambitious progressive rock outfit, known for theatrical live shows filled with elaborate costumes and surreal storytelling. The sound evolved into a more radio-friendly style, especially after Gabriel’s departure and Collins’ rise as lead vocalist. This shift brought massive success in the ’80s with hits like Invisible Touch and Land of Confusion, blending clever lyrics with infectious pop hooks.

Despite lineup changes and evolving styles, Genesis maintained a reputation for musicianship, innovation, and reinvention — managing to please both prog-rock purists and pop fans alike.

Fun fact: Phil Collins originally joined Genesis as a drummer and only became the lead singer after auditioning other vocalists — and realizing no one else could quite nail it like he could.
