Formed in 1982, The Smiths gave us four years of jangly guitars, poetic despair, and Morrissey's quiff—arguably their greatest achievement. Johnny Marr's shimmering riffs met Morrissey's lyrics about meat, cemeteries, and the general awfulness of everything, creating the soundtrack for every sensitive soul who ever felt misunderstood. When the band split in 1987 (there is a light that never goes out, except apparently between bandmates), Morrissey continued the tradition of beautiful sadness solo.
