1980s

The 1980s saw the advent of MTV, synthesizers, and larger-than-life personalities. Michael Jackson became the King of Pop with Thriller, the best-selling album of all time, while Madonna redefined female pop stardom with provocative hits like "Like a Virgin." Prince blended funk, rock, and new wave into his unique sound. New Wave dominated with Duran Duran leading the British invasion, while U2 emerged as stadium rock giants. Alternative rock found its voice through The Smiths' jangly guitars and introspective lyrics. Hip-hop entered the mainstream, electronic music flourished, and power ballads ruled the airwaves.
